The Story
When Muskegon Community College purchased the 31,000sq ft lakefront YMCA for a bargain $1.17 million in 2015, it made a wise choice. Four years later, the wisdom of that decision for both MCC and the community is unquestionable. A substantial portion of the college’s $48 million operational budget is funded by the annual $2.5m paid by Muskegon County’s property taxpayers. This will raise $11 million this fiscal year, $9.5 million for MCC’s operations, plus another $1.5 million for debt on recent campus expansion.
It made sense for the college to buy the struggling, downtown YMCA, built and sustained with millions in local donations and member fees over past decades. Thanks to the college’s leadership, the building, pool and equipment have been upgraded for millions less than it would have cost the college to build a needed aquatic center. The purchase also created new jobs for students, who earn their tuition by working at the facility.
I joined the “Y”, many years ago, when it was on Clay Avenue. My experiences to date are of a facility that is conveniently located, that has a plethora of options for my physical needs. The staff is always welcoming. I have linen service to prevent me from having excuses to ‘not show up’. I also enjoy the comradeship of fellow patrons. I feel like I’m important to the staff- that they care about my experience and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that it’s a positive one.
This is how to get involved. You can tell us your story, you can help us out with a donation, you can come to our regular meetings, tweet and post about us or you can just simply continue to use and talk about this wonderful facility!
