The Lakeshore Fitness Center saved my life. After a career of desk jobs, I knew I needed to get myself physically active again so the first place I headed for was the “Y”.  Finally, I could take morning water aerobics classes!  Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings – rain or shine, summer or winter – water aerobics comes first!”

The Story

When Muskegon Community College purchased the 31,000sq ft lakefront YMCA for a bargain $1.17 million in 2015, it made a wise choice. Four years later, the wisdom of that decision for both MCC and the community is unquestionable. A substantial portion of the college’s $48 million operational budget is funded by the annual $2.5m paid by Muskegon County’s property taxpayers. This will raise $11 million this fiscal year, $9.5 million for MCC’s operations, plus another $1.5 million for debt on recent campus expansion.

It made sense for the college to buy the struggling, downtown YMCA, built and sustained with millions in local donations and member fees over past decades. Thanks to the college’s leadership, the building, pool and equipment have been upgraded for millions less than it would have cost the college to build a needed aquatic center. The purchase also created new jobs for students, who earn their tuition by working at the facility.

“The lakeside location could be developed into a center for water sports such as learning to kayak or paddle board. With new members and community partners to help with financing the site, we can save the LFC as an accessible, community asset for all of us and a draw for new downtown residents.”

“The two biggest things a community needs to grow in a positive way is to educate its people and to help those people stay healthy. The LFC gym is special because it has so many amenities which can touch the lives of people who have different wants and needs from the inside of the facility to the outside. Watch us go!”

I joined the “Y”, many years ago, when it was on Clay Avenue. My experiences to date are of a facility that is conveniently located, that has a plethora of options for my physical needs. The staff is always welcoming. I have linen service to prevent me from having excuses to ‘not show up’. I also enjoy the comradeship of fellow patrons. I feel like I’m important to the staff- that they care about my experience and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that it’s a positive one.
